Entertainment has always been an important part of life, and the invention of music halls is seen as an important step in its history. When they were first in use, these entertainment venues provided audiences with supper while they viewed numerous entertainments on the stage. There were many different acts such as singers, musicians, mimes and acrobats to name a few. All of them were charged with satisfying the need to astonish diners who had paid for admission.

The concept of music halls has changed from their beginning in early 1830 until today. Dining, wine or alcohol and live entertainment were the important features at first. When zoning laws were changed to exclude alcohol, entertainment and food had to make up the difference and provide more value to customers. Many of them failed at this, and those that survived sought audiences who were interested in more sedate forms of entertainment.
